Comic Reviews for Kabooooom

I love comics. I think my love of comics started when I was little and my sister and I used to read the Sunday funnies into my dad’s tape recorder. I’ve done a few very short comic reviews on this site, but have been trying to figure out how to get a little more in depth into the comic reviews on a writer’s salary. I recently started working with a fantastic site (the third o is silent). So far I have done a couple comic reviews, and I’m excited to do many more in the future. You can see my review on Manhattan Projects and The Wheel of Time here.

I think Kabooooom is going to take the place of the now defunct Wizard Magazine. They were always my fix for comic culture, and with the addition of Kabooooom’s comic, toy, manga/anime, and game reviews, I don’t think it will be a big step for them to jump right into that role. It’s one stop shopping for geeks with an engaging layout. Go check out their site, Like them on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter.

KARA is amazing!

I want to preface this post with a little tidbit. The name KARA is said like karat, as in “Look at that whopping 20 karat diamond ring.” Think Kara Starbuck or Supergirl. The name CARA is said like CAR-uh. As in “Hey mechanic man, about my car… uh why is it making that noise.”

PlayStation released this amazing new video a few days ago. “The KARA video was created by Quantic Dream solely to show the jump in development technology they have made since their last game Heavy Rain.”  This little technology exploration plays like a movie. The imagery is beautiful and I would love to see more. A few years ago, I read a novella called His Robot Girlfriend by Wesley Allison. I think if that book were to come alive it would look very similar to KARA.

Take a look.

SXSW Planning Just Got Easier

There’s nowhere I would rather be next week than SXSW, but I’ll be holding the fort down here in Boise, getting ready for Treefort Music Fest. If you are on your way to the awesomeness that is SXSW, but are feeling a little overwhelmed with the schedule, never fear, Monstro is here. Laying out the bands that are trending and figuring out where you want to be just got a little easier. The SXSW website has a long list of the venues and artists playing this giant 5000+ event festival, and their schedule is definitely comprehensive, but if you’re looking for a bit of help through the chaos Monstro has released their MONSTRO SOCIAL MUSIC CHART SXSW EDITION.

Put the power of Monstro to work for you at SXSW Music- There are a lot of artists showcasing at this year’s SXSW music conference. With the help and power of Monstro, you can see which bands are trending right now, were tops for the day, or have built excitement during all of SXSW. You can also tailor the result by Venue or Genre.

Monstro’s press release stated, “users can interact, via Twitter, with artists and listen to their music via Rdio. By culminating tweets shared about SXSW, the chart provides a simple, immediate way for fans to interact with artists and discover break-out hits, and artists can respond to and engage with their fans.” Monstro is an innovator in linking social media and music to both fans and artists.

“We want to make it easy for SXSW attendees to see which artists are trending and select which artists to see, and interact with those artists. And, we want to provide a way for artists to interact with their fans,” said Jeff Fedor, co-founder and co-CEO, Monstro. “We think we’ve done that by developing the free Monstro Social Music Chart SXSW Edition.”

If you aren’t familiar with Monstro and their social networking aspect to bringing music to the masses, you can read about them here. I can’t wait to hear all about SXSW when everyone gets back!

Johnny Marr Gives Insight into Smiths Reunion

Hubby and I have an agreement that the only man I will ever leave him for is Johnny Marr. S’all good. He’s okay with it. After all, The Smiths lead guitarist and I share a city, when he’s on this side of the pond, and he’s just that cool.

At the NME Awards, broadcast on March 3rd, Johnny picked up the Best Reissue award for The Smith’s compilation he released last year. Eight of The Smiths albums were re-mastered the way he had always wanted to hear them, and garnered accolades that were well deserved. After the awards show, Marr was met with questions about the award (the first The Smiths have ever received), his relationship with Morrissey, and whether releasing The Smiths’ COMPLETE left him with a desire to reunite The Smiths. Lately, I have been seeing rumors floating about the interwebs pertaining to a Smiths reunion, so I was primed to hear what Johnny Marr thought about the subject.

Blizzard to Lay off 600 Employees…I feel so guilty

I totes feel like a jerk for canceling my WoW subscription, after reading the news that Activision Blizzard Inc. is laying off 600 employees. The layoffs will occur in the Blizzard Entertainment sector, but it is reported that most of the cuts will come from non-game development departments. Sadly, the number of active subscribers to World of Warcraft, Blizz’s cash cow, have dropped since the release of Trion’s Rift last year and EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic a few months ago.

As an avid WoW player, I’m not surprised by the decline in subscriptions, as the standard of gaming is getting rather steep and gamers want more. After patch 4.3, which was anxiously awaited and was met with a resounding “meh” by players, defecting to greener pastures, such as Rift and SWTOR, wasn’t a far leap. Fans of SWTOR were waiting years for its release, and there was no way Blizz was going to be able to keep  those fans from leaving. Rift is a far superior game play experience for mature WoW players. When I left WoW to play Rift, I found that trade chat isn’t filled with obnoxious teenagers mudslinging and generally showing why it sucks to play with immature teenagers. Yes, I miss the beautiful music and gorgeous artwork in World of Warcraft, but I’m satisfied with what I’ve left behind because of the game play experience I’ve gained. Also, as a loyal Blizzhead and WoW player, canceling Blizzcon 2012 was bad for fan morale, and making me wait until quarter 4 of 2012 to release Mists of Pandaria is just not going to satiate me. There are too many ways I can get my fix now, especially with the news of Free to Play Everquest and DC Universe. Blizz, you became complacent and then figured out you needed to scramble to catch up. I think it’s sad that people have to be laid off, but something had to give and it hasn’t been Blizz giving to their fans.

Super Hero Gear for Pets

I’m no stranger to dressing up my pooch. My faithful Maximilian Pugglesworth has won numerous costume contests and continues to dazzle when he’s geared up and strutting down the street. My favorite of the creations he wears is his Ryuk costume. Ryuk the Shinigami (Deathnote) is one of my favorite characters, and one day when the Pug was primed to jump on the couch I saw an uncanny resemblance that had to come to fruition.

So we made it happen.

If you want to get your precious pooch noticed, I just found these awesome Marvel toys and gear for your super hero dog at PetSmart. Click here to find your favorite. I’m thinking my Max is definitely going to be an Avenger and he must have a Wolverine squeaky toy. Thank you, Marvel! Bock Bock!

Free Comic Book Day

STK460557 Image

While adding events to my calendar today, I realized that there are only 62 days until Free Comic Book Day 2012. Why is FCBD an important day to mark in the calendar, because this is a national holiday in our house. Every year, we clear the weekend, take the day off work as needed, and get excited to hit all our favorite comic stores. Sadly, now that we live in Boise, there are only about 4 stores we get to hit. I’m thinking we may need to go back to our home town of Portland, so we can celebrate this holiday in proper fashion. Here’s a little tale about one of our last Free Comic Book Days in Portland.

Free Comic Book Day…or better known as the assembly of H1N1 carriers.

New Avengers Trailer

Oh, I wish you could see the goosebumps on my arm. The new Avengers trailer hit Apple Trailers this morning and it is rad. Click here to watch.  Is it bad that I love Loki the most? I guess I always did have a soft spot for the black sheep of the family. Marvel really knows how to give me what I want for my birthday. I can’t wait to watch this movie, even with Mark Ruffalo.

Davy Jones Dead at Age 66

Everyone’s favorite Monkee, Davy Jones, suffered a heart attack at his Florida home and was transported to Martin Memorial Hospital, where he later passed away. TMZ broke the story. Davy Jones joined Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork to form the Monkees in 1965. Television producers had formed the band to create an entertaining show about a rock band, but never knew that they would be creating a band that would be loved by all and would churn out hit after hit. Davy was especially explosive gaining heartthrob status and making appearances on many shows, including the Brady Bunch. Jones is survived by his wife, Jessica, and four daughters. He will be missed.
